there are 2 reasons to ban TikTok: 1) moral panic stuff that, in any case, applies to all the other algorithmic social media platforms; and 2) fears about an authoritarian gov having a tool that it could use to undermine democratic discourse in the US (“national security”).
(1) can be solved by other kinds of regulation, but (2) can’t, and I genuinely don’t think liberal democracies survive if they don’t take steps to protect their information ecosystems from meddling by authoritarian states.
