Bethesda's Fallout ruined every game, by turning "Pick a Perk" into the only RPG mechanic the game had.
Perks are now the core advancement mechanic of every game, but they've been boring all along. They were fun in Fallout 1/2 because you weren't *expecting* something, and didn't know what was coming on the first dozen playthroughs, and it was actually a perk. Not, as they are now, a tiny incremental upgrade that you've been grinding towards all week.
