Yes. Makefile is equally horrendous when it comes to tabs/spaces. But Make is also much more than just a data container file format.

There are tons of text file formats which isn't user hostile and gives needed flexibility and readability. Which all are superior to the YAML and derivative variants.

The simplest alternatives are TOML (or the simpler INI) and JSON if you need the data more structured. Plus tools like jq making JSON data extraction quite easy to use in scripts.

I even find it easier to work with XML files over YAML files, despite the verbosity and quoting and tag traps it includes.
