It was just like the internet said: my phone charging port was flaky because it needed a good cleaning. Specifically, the compacted lint needed to be (carefully but thoroughly) removed with a toothpick for the USB-C plug to go all the way in and sit tight.
Now I feel like I have a new phone. When I pick it up in the morning it is reliably 100% charged and I don't have to worry about it during the day.
