npub1r8n0yr3cw9k4z333vscucww5j6xp46mz904adqz6pdch3duwptgqf2mpuh (npub1r8n…mpuh) When considering the mother-daughter pair that I nabbed from my front porch, Sumie's stripes were much more watered-down and painted with a much thicker brush. In addition, her mother was a fairly light tan/brown, except for jet black paw pads. I've had tabbies before, and their flank patterns were much more crisp. So the joke was that her stripes had been painted on by her mother.
Which brought my mental train of thought to the sumi-e art technique (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ink_wash_painting ), which was simplified into the name Sumie (which I pronounce like the actual name Sumi).

For the other cats:
Primrose: I thought she looked like a little old-timey child and the name Primrose came to me
