When ESA's Mars Express mission launched to Mars, it was carrying an instrument called the Visual Monitoring Camera. It was essentially a webcam with a 40x30-degree field of view, designed to monitor the separation of the Beagle 2 lander when the spacecraft arrived at Mars. Years later, it was turned on again, providing full-disk images of Mars. In 2018, scientists were regularly using it to track Martian weather, turning it into a productive scientific instrument.
