low batteries
old way: when the battery's low, you get some indicator. When the battery's too low to operate, the thing doesn't turn on and you try charging it. If charging it doesn't fix it, it has some other problem. The thing tries to do its job so long as it has power to do so, and only fails to do its job out of necessity.
new way (2018+?): when the battery's low the thing starts to do its job, but then interrupts itself and says "HEY MY BATTERY IS LOW. You will have to charge me to get me to continue." The thing tries to do its job so long as it has abundant power, and otherwise it refuses to do its job out of protest, like you're cruelly refusing to feed a slave.
Scales are the worse case of this. It flashes an interim weight, showing that it could do its job if it wanted to, before complaining about the battery.
