Really? - only 3 degrees of freedom in symmetric 3x3 (not 5 as one would expect for d orbital)…?

I always thought of p orbitals as deviations from a sphere - so if p1 = x then points on the sphere with positive x move proportionately in the positive x direction, while those with negative x move in the negative x direction to create an ellipsoid, a bit like tides.
