I suspect that the performance for the NABJ was more about getting attention for himself and centering himself as being victimized by "nasty women" than anything else. The performance was for his base, he doesn't actually care about convincing Black people en masse I suspect and was more invested in demonizing Black women. Trump's comfortable in this dynamic, he thinks it's good for him (see his debate with Clinton, this seemed like more of the same to me). His base is all about their grievances about not being "respected" (and not being perpetually indulged by women/mommy).
