Eternal damnation and God as 'summum bonum' is one of the many cognitive dissonances inherent within Christianity. Most Christians I know personally believe in a form of 'Christian universalism,' even if they don't know the term.
Their justification for the existence of religion would be that it's a highway to heaven instead of a perhaps several aeon long detour.
