I decided that the server software had to be free (aka open source), that the development tools had to be excellent and varied, and that the developer documentation had to be top notch. -- XCode and Apple’s docs fail immediately, whereas “clunky old PHP” still meets all my requirements, and has only gotten faster and more capable over time.
