My brother is retarded. Literally. Not metaphorically. Not yuck yuck “he’s so dumb.” He’s got a VERY low IQ. My parents choose to create a false dichotomy surrounding the expectation of how we are all supposed to treat him. On one hand. He is an adult man. On the other hand he has the mind of a six year old.
Is this a kind thing for them to have set up? Who is it unkind to?
Are they telling the truth? How much truth are they choosing to tell in an effort to be more kind?
All three of them are relatively miserable people by the way.
However. When my brother is faced with interactions with people that give him very solid boundaries where he knows where he stands and is given very black and white understandable options in his life he respects them and appreciates them.
It is a very simplistic statement to make. You’re right. My point was to say that denying reality in favor of being nice is no way to live. Not for me anyway. Perhaps some would like to avoid the pain of reality but that’s just not functional for me.
