in case of Cholesterol you can keep switching up different sub-types that you measure for such that the moment it is revealed your previous research was all BS you now have new types of Cholesterol to research and so you kick the can down the road ...

it's how LG sells refrigerators - they last a year and by the time all the reviews of them failing come out they release a new model so the negative reviews are all buried with the last year's model ...
