He got his own opinion on what to choose and managed to grow into a big name, and able to give back to the community.
FreeBSD was used in PlayStation at some point and they changed it. So even with Sony funds they found reasons against FreeBSD in their product. And nothing was given back to FreeBSD.
I like diversity and interoperability of different platforms, but calling something negativily is not really productive in a long run.
