So... Wtf?
Some people are saying its evidence of pole shifts and sudden tectonic movements. Maybe.
There's another possibility : civilization.
Possibly a breakaway civilization.
If a civilization was fully exploiting all planetary surface resources, there would be one last place to exploit - the frozen poles. But how?
You would need to unfreeze them. You would need a full growing season, not literally half the year in darkness. How?
Observe : Lagrange points
A Lagrange point is a place in space where the gravity of two bodies cancels out. We already have a satellite positioned at the Earth-Solar L1 monitoring the sun.
What you do is, you put the satellite in orbit of the L point - trying to position it precisely, with no movement whatsoever in relation to the two bodies would only result in it flying off into space.
Several mirrors positioned in orbit around L1, in an orbit 90° off the plane of the ecliptic, could direct sunlight to Antarctica, and they would be stable for thousands of years with zero refuelling cost.
A one-time, up front cost with thousands of years of yield... This is an obvious move. Even if no ancient civilization ever actually did it - and it would be hard to prove either way - we should do it.
