Man, it's been 53 years since they said they'd "temporarily" stop letting people trade dollars for gold. That move let us go on endless wars since '71 'cause they didn't have to pay for it out of pocket. They just watered down our money instead.
Before 1970, if the U.S. wanted to fight a war, they'd mostly use taxes, war bonds, and take out loans. Like during WWII, they'd sell bonds to the public, crank up taxes, and borrow a ton from whoever would lend it to them. But back then, the gold standard was like a leash on how much money they could just print out of thin air, until they ditched it in '71.
