The theory is that it both cuts off the ability to do racist/sexist/nepotist selection claiming there was some hidden characteristic that made one candidate "better", and it frees up everyone from wasting disproportionate amounts of energy trying to be or appear "best" because once you establish sufficiency, you're done.
