I host multiple gitlab instances (community edition, which is amazing) on VPSs that cost ~ €7/month. The setup takes about an hour with occasional upgrades taking about 5 min. That said, I prefer the ethics of the Forgejo project, which is the Gitea fork used by Codeberg. It's even lighter weight to host.",
