Wagner Moura and Kleber Mendonça Filho have already won the Best Actor and Best Director awards, respectively, for 'The Secret Agent'. The film is one of the contenders for the top honor of the festival. The production is a political thriller set in the late 1970s, during Brazil's military dictatorship. Just before the announcement of the winners, the Brazilian film was awarded the best film of the festival by the Fipresci jury, the main association of film critics worldwide, and also the Prix des Cinémas Art et Essai, by the French Association of Art and Essay Cinemas. Despite being a constant presence at the festival, Brazil has not won the Palme d'Or in over 60 years. The only time it did was with 'The Promise Keeper', directed by Anselmo Duarte, in 1962. Winners of the Palme d'Or often gain significant recognition in the Oscar race. Last year's winner, 'Anora', directed by Sean Baker, took home awards for Best Picture, Director, Actress (Mikey Madison), Screenplay, and Editing at the Academy Awards.
