The 76th Festival de Cannes, one of the most prestigious film events, is holding its closing ceremony on Saturday, 24, which will feature the awarding of the Palme d'Or. Wagner Moura and Kleber Mendonça Filho have already won the Best Actor and Best Director awards, respectively, for The Secret Agent. The film is among the contenders for the top honor of the festival. The production is a political thriller set in the late 1970s, during the Brazilian military dictatorship. Just before the announcement of the winners, the Brazilian film won the best film award from the Fipresci jury, the main association of film critics worldwide, and also the Prix des Cinémas Art et Essai from the French Association of Art and Essay Cinemas. Despite being a constant presence at the festival, Brazil has not won the Palme d'Or in over 60 years. The only time it did was with The Promise Keeper, by Anselmo Duarte, in 1962. The winners of the Palme d'Or often gain significant recognition in the Oscar competition. Last year, for example, the grand winner, Anora, by Sean Baker, took home the awards for Best Film, Director, Actress (Mikey Madison), Screenplay, and Editing at the largest film award.
