this looks a lot like a typical dish from my region in brasil: Feijão Tropeiro. It was the food made by cowboys herding cows in the Brazilian "sertão" during the 1800s: Brown beans, Couve (collard greens, but kale might do it), smoked sausage or bacon, eggs, and cassava flour (aka manioc flour).
About the kale, you should stir fry it before adding it to the dish, it takes away the bitter taste.
