I really can't think of better encapsulation of the state of US politics than Trump in 2024 ranting about Hillary Clinton's emails, while surrounded by buzzing flies because he forgot about the raw meat that his aides put in front of a country club to make some sort of point about inflation.
Meanwhile, the Trumpist movement has gutted the congressional Republicans, leaving only empty shells like McCarthy and Trumpist true believers with little identity of their own.
I don't really think the election is as close as polls may imply. US elections are always won by enthusiasm, and Republican enthusiasm is in the toilet right now.
