When I grew up, the edgiest subculture were not the metal kids or punk kids or hip hop kids.
They were the club kids. If you don’t know what I’m referring to, I’m talking about a subculture that predated rave culture – and caused big moral panic on so many daytime talk shows.
I’m talking about the scene that nurtured RuPaul, Amanda Lepore, James St. James, etc.
What? You don’t imagine these folks could be involved in anything edgy now? Well, look up Michael Alig. Also, research all the shenanigans that happened at Danceteria and Palladium.
Much of that stuff doesn’t happen anymore. For good reason.
