i didn't mention that because iirc the actual ocg was very new at the time and preproduction on the anime started way before the actual card game but i could be wrong and i don't feel like doing any research
my point is that the actual duels and plot in DM didn't get good until season 4 (yes, the orichalcos bullshit is fun to me BECAUSE it's bullshit but the next season is a snoozefest for half the runtime)
but gx never got good, even the yubel duel fucking sucks and the nightshroud one isn't a good apology for the fact that gx is 90% yapping (of which 50% is fucking filler) and 10% dueling between terrible decks with maybe 2-3 card chains at best
also i somehow hate johan/jesse even more than i hate lua/leo
