The German word for a big round container is is "Tonne", and the DWDS says its derived from medieval Latin "tunna" or "tonna" for "big barrel", as used in Gallia. It's origin is probably Celtic, the DWDS speculates whether its probably related to Old Irish "tonn", for "skin" as in "wineskin".

A German "Tonne" can be used for both liquid and dry content, so its a generic term for a big round container.

What is called "barrel" in English can also be a "Fass" in German, but a "Fass" is used for liquids only. Which is ironic, because "fassen" means "to contain", so "Fass" translates literally to a generic "container".
