The US Air Force is working on a programme to produce nearly a thousand unmanned jet fighters equipped with artificial intelligence.
This is reported by The Wall Street Journal. The first hundred are to be delivered over the next five years. The aim of the programme is to contain China. The Pentagon also wants to strengthen its air force, which is at its lowest level since 1947.
These unmanned fighters will be designed to escort and protect manned aircraft (such as the F-35 or B-21) and will be able to carry their own weapons to attack air and ground targets. They will also be used for reconnaissance. Without pilots, they will be able to carry out more risky manoeuvres.
By this summer, the U.S. military plans to decide which companies will receive such a contract. The programme has a budget of $6 billion.
