I am in the US and can't say this is standard policy, but locally we have a no alcohol sales in a grocery store before and after certain hours, in my town it is like 8 am to 9 pm. Why you can't buy booze in a grocery store when the bars are still open, I will never know. Anyway...
One night I was in a grocery store and grabbed a bottle of Old Fashioned mix. This has no alcohol in it, basically cherry and orange juice. Because it was after 9pm, they would not sell it to me. I assume because it was categorized in the liquor dept in the database and the register programmed to not allow any sales from that department at that time.
It was still very odd to me.
