good news, it seems that the weird errors i was seeing is because i have made some breaking change in the database encoding scheme somehow, and simply nuking the db and reimporting has fixed it
however, it looked an awful lot like it was encoding it with a new experimental more compact encoding with base64 signatures that was actually the core of the problem
i think i can fix that easily
