I was taught that it started with the Balfour declaration, which if I recall correctly was after the first war but before the second.
That said, I think that the historical moment in which it *actually* happened is highly significant, and it could pretty much *only* have happened in the context of colonial control of the ME.
Atheist as I may be, I don't think it's got FA to do with religion at this moment.
