Rather, people who want power & money will use any tool they can to get them. Religions give those people easy handles to grab for same, but so do constant 'messaging' rallies, newspaper biases, and so on.
Religions per se don't have to cater to hate and fear, but the tools they give you for coping with life have a back door: A**holes can use them to get you to behave the way they want.
