This is because people are naturally lazy in this millennia.

No one wants to take the time or use the extra little bit of energy. It's like when you refer to someone's significant other... It's easier to say boyfriend or girlfriend but not both. For the human mind it is easier to remember to just say the opposite sex followed by friend. Who wants to waste breath on saying both? Not unlike how people say friend because acquaintance or associate is just too long. Now if you have to remember alternative pronouns on top of names and none are consistent with what you were taught 10+ years ago -- you're going to try to opt out. One could argue that there's a collective cognitive decline and biases.
