In a nutshell, the 577 members of the French National Assembly are elected using a majority system with two rounds. To be elected in the first round, a candidate must receive a majority of the ballots cast in his or her electoral constituency (and more than 25% of registered voters). Otherwise, there is a run-off election between the top two candidates. Under certain conditions, a three-way race can take place, but the 3rd-placed candidate may drop out and ask voters to rally behind another. So that the far right won't win the seat, for instance. In the 2d round, the candidate with the most votes is elected at the National Assembly.
