Normal people don't usually read scientific papers. Science pop magazines should be the way but they are not often great at going beyond overinflated claims that some scientists feel the need to put in their papers (to get into those high IF journals).
Maybe a more direct path from scientists to the public would work better? For example the Fediverse could have a science feed vetted by scientists that anyone could access for free?
