I don't think this is actually an issue of my setup not being good enough.
not exactly anyway
since my local client is doing the voodoo of pathfinding, its easy to confuse.
once i reset to the defaults, it was able to find a path.
it's just an awkward and not extremely well documented Rube Goldberg machine.
