I was just blindly staring at my computer and had the following thought:
"tar.gz archives are just a compressed tar file. That means tar's are kind of like a filesystem. I wonder if I could just write a tar to a flashdrive like an img file and use tar commands to move files on and off of it."
And then I remembered tape drives exist and that is literally how they work.
