My two cents.

1. The federated nature of the system should be completely invisible to users in everyday use. The technical side of it should NOT matter at all. It shouldn't be something users need to worry about, understand or even know about. The content of the fediverse should be accessible to everyone in the same way, no matter which instance they use.

2. It should be very clear to users how the instance affects them. I mean the non-technical side: rules, restrictions, UI, who runs the instance, how it is funded, how reliable it is, can it be shut down if an admin gets tired, how they collect and use the data etc. I'd also add that the UX should be better. Mastodon Bird UI should be the default frontend 😉

3. It should be super easy to switch between instances. Right now it is way too complicated and there is no easy way to move your profile and posts between instances. The experience should feel like it is YOUR data.

As for the content, I have no idea. I like the fact that there are no algorithms. But maybe it would be useful to have an improved new user experience to help them get started.

Disclaimer: I'm happy with the way things are now. I like it better than any other social media platform. At the same time, I understand why some people find it off-putting and too complicated.
