There are too many missing things in SteamOS that would have worked in normal linux. Valve did not make a good linux, it wasn't built for games either because it relys entirety on Proton. Valve made Steam Deck for profit, nothing else. I hate it when people say "it's a linux computer", a real linux computer doesn't require internet service or get locked into a brand.
