#OnThisDay, 6 Sept 2013, American Marin Alsop becomes the first woman to conduct the Last Night of the Proms in London.
The Promenades (“Proms”) were established in 1895 to encourage a love of orchestral music. Since 1927, the BBC have organised and broadcast the concerts. The last night of the proms is the most high profile concert, with a lot of flag-waving and singing along.
