If someone said "we should ban shitposting and memes from Mastodon. We should keep it for serious business."
You'd understand how that would undermine Mastodon for serious work as well, right? You'd understand how that would just lead to fewer people and less engagement.
It's the same thing when politicians and lobbyists make serious-sounding proposals to cut entertainment and sports out of public service broadcasting and "just concentrate on the serious stuff." It's a way to undermine it.
