You could backup to your own server using open source software rather than relying on third parties. I use the open source Syncthing to backup my phone including photos automatically.
Setting up a simple Linux server on old hardware is pretty cheap to do and surprisingly effective. Setting up a private network of cloud servers spread across a couple of households so you can provide secure, private, cloud services for your extended family isn't too complicated either.
