Honestly I find whether I’m doing solo or pair work the most efficient use of my time is usually about 50-60% focus and the rest either letting my mind wonder or talking light shop with collaborators. I try focusing for longer than that and my productivity plummets. I’m still one of the better performers on the team.
Having also worked a four day week my anecdotal experience is that is much more productive and pleasant all around. The biggest issue is that if you’re the only person on the team doing that then your off-day becomes everyone else’s focus time, which means the rest of your week can get blatted by meetings.
