i honestly kinda miss gratuitous differences between platforms or architectures that *actually exercised portability issues*
endianness bugs were a common problem for me in 2003-2004 building foss packages that were mostly tested on Linux/x86 being on a funky BSD/PPC
fixed some bugs in gnu image manipulation program file format plugins back then, iirc the windows bmp and ico handlers especially :D
