At one point a few people (namely Madison and Hamilton if I’m remembering correctly) pushed hard for a amendment to better define how the electoral congress functioned, but it was abandoned after Hamilton died. Now presidential elections are just a popularity contest with the contestants hand picked by the most loud and extreme from both sides.
