Depends on which ones you are looking to get involved in. There are different digital radio standards and they aren't compatible, around me DMR is most common. Check with local hams if you can to see what is common around you.

I only have experience with DMR. Any DMR radio is going to be fine for the most part. The big hassle is the CPS to program it. For a beginner I think the opengd77 cps is easiest by a mile. The only downside is it means flashing your new radio with a 3rd party firmware. I have a UV380 and the flashing was easy, well worth it for the easier CPS. Many consider the anytone the king, but I like my uv380 more after flashing opengd77.
