When I moved to the UK in 2006 Costa was about the best you could expect for espresso in almost all of the UK. (And the purported good places in London were mainly rubbish compared to Sydney, but there were a couple of NZer ran places that knew now to pour an espresso.)
The coffee scene here has come along in leaps and bounds since then.
