It’s significant that Russia’s choice of allies is essentially a laundry list of countries which share a grievance mentality. In that respect it’s similar to the way that right wing populists seek out people susceptible to a narrative that their grievances have simple solutions that involve crushing a bad guy. Whether it’s states or cults full of useful idiots it’s essentially the same plan.
