As you correctly pointed out, family is the basic unit of society which is then followed by community. Governance has to come from the bottom up to have any remnance of democratic rule. At the moment we have defacto corporate rule which is made possible by legalized lobbying and insider training. It's the reason DC has so many luxury car dealerships.
