We found out about the galactic equivalent of of the internet (and—by a pretty obvious inference—that We Are Not Alone) because MAORI, the Microwave Anisotropy Orbital Radio Interferometer, struggled with persistent interference.

But that wasn’t the big surprise. The traffic was two way, /something/ on Earth was communicating with what the MAORI team took to calling the Galactinet.

But that wasn’t the big surprise either. The seventeen year old sister of a MAORI engineer became obsessed with the Galactinet packet captures, and eventually cracked the encoding and content.

The first message decoded appeared to be a search query. If rendered in English it would have read “how to eradicate meatlife infestation”
