Getting it under control would have been forcing Ukraine to accept their loss of ethnic Russian regions who didn't want to be Ukrainian anyway and were only administratively transferred because of poor decisions by IIRC Khrushchev. Every day this continues is on the West and on Zelensky for not doing exactly that. The West is escalating a regional conflict with deep ethnic roots into a globally retarded shitshow.
