I'm not really talking about the USA state. The central mission of journalism is to stand up for people against power; by doing so it keeps the basics of democracy functioning.
In this case one symptom of the dysfunction is indeed the decay of the central state; but a similarly bad outcome for the people could also happen by the federal state becoming stronger.
